Born Essay Competition on International Arbitration, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Indian Journal of Arbitration Law (IJAL) and the Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Arbitration Law (CARTAL) are pleased to announce the 2nd Gary\u00a0B.\u00a0Born\u00a0Essay Writing Competition on International Arbitration, 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Indian Journal of Arbitration Law (\u2018IJAL\u2019) is a bi-annual, open-access, student-run journal\u00a0published by the Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Arbitration Law (CARTAL). IJAL\u00a0is widely recognized as the leading Indian dispute resolution journal and an excellent source of\u00a0reference in the field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Centre for Advanced Research &amp; Training in Arbitration Law (CARTAL) is one of the various\u00a0centres set up by National Law University, Jodhpur to promote research and scholarship in\u00a0specialized fields of law. CARTAL seeks to empower students with a theoretical and practical\u00a0understanding of arbitration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Themes:<\/strong><br \/>\ni. Due process \u2018paranoia\u2019 in international arbitration<br \/>\nii. Reforming ICSID arbitration: challenges and the way forward<br \/>\niii. Internationally mandatory rules and the enforcement of\u00a0arbitration agreements<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ABOUT THE ESSAY COMPETITION:\u00a0<\/strong>The essay competition has been conceived to encourage law students to explore forward-looking issues in international arbitration. In 2016, CARTAL successfully conducted the 1st edition of the\u00a0Gary B. Born Essay Competition on the themes of prospects of a bilateral arbitration treaty,\u00a0desirability of arbitration of public law claims, and a ten year review of the UNCITRAL Model Law\u00a0on International Arbitration. The themes of the second edition of the competition aim to foster\u00a0research on some of the contemporary developments in international arbitration.\u00a0Due process \u2018paranoia\u2019 is now emerging as a significant concern among scholars in international\u00a0arbitration. Under this theme, participants may examine issues including but not limited to, the use\u00a0and misuse of due process, the blurring of the line between procedure and the excessive notions of\u00a0due process, and potential implications of this excessive attention to process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>RULES OF THE COMPETITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0There is no registration fee for the competition.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The competition is open to all students enrolled in an undergraduate or post graduate\u00a0programme in law (B.C.L., J.D., LL.B., LL.M. or their local equivalent) in any recognised\u00a0university across the world. Students who have completed an above mentioned programme or\u00a0their equivalent in 2017, and post graduate students who are selected for, and will be enrolled in\u00a0any such programme for 2017-2018 are also eligible to participate.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To participate in the competition, interested students must e-mail a copy of their completed\u00a0essays to <a href=\"mailto:editors@ijal.in\">editors@ijal.in<\/a> by 2359 hours on August 31, 2017 (Indian Standard Time,\u00a0GMT+5:30). Late submissions shall not be accepted under any circumstances whatsoever.<\/li>\n<li>No part of the essay should contain any form of identification of the participant, and any such\u00a0information, if detected, would lead to disqualification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>SUBMISSION GUIDELINES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The essay must be submitted in Microsoft Word document format (.doc\/.docx).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The essay must contain an Abstract, not exceeding 250 words. The abstract must indicate the\u00a0theme chosen.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A participant can submit an entry for one theme only.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Co-authorship is not permitted.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word limit is 4500 \u2013 6500 words including footnotes.
