The webinar on ‘Career in Tech Laws’ was organised by the Law and Tech Times, RGNUL on December 5, 2021 in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and EBC- SCC Online as an outreach partner. Law & Tech Times is a student-run, blind peer-reviewed newsletter/blog, working under Centre for Innovation and Intellectual Property (CIIPR), and based at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab. It is the flagship initiative in the field of technology law, founded with the objective of facilitating research in the field of technological advancements and its interface with law.

The session was moderated by Shereen Moza and Aditya Srivastava (Student member), who began by introducing the guest speaker, Mr. Samraat Basu, lecturer in law and technology at Tilburg University, Netherlands. Mr. Samraat Basu, alumnus of RGNUL, had pursued an Advanced LLM in Law and Digital Technologies from Leiden University, The Hague, Netherlands. He has worked with Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas in its TMT / Data Protection Team for close to two years where he advised leading multinational companies on their nuanced queries regarding privacy, gaming, artificial intelligence and machine learning, telemedicine, Aadhaar, fin-tech and other emergent technology and data protection related issues. He was previously a research fellow with Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy where he provided legal advice, research assistance and policy inputs to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, Ministry of Finance and the Srikrishna Committee on the Personal Data Protection Bill.

He interacted with the students on the nuances of specializing in technology law as a lucrative career option and talked about his experience as a lecturer and also the intricacies of the work done at firms and policy thinktanks. He emphasized about his experience with tech law and as an NRI, besides discussing the importance of contemplating over what they exactly want to pursue within law and reading a lot about it. He also stressed on the major influence that an LLM at a highly ranked university has on the career of law students. Students asked questions about the building blocks of a successful career in tech law to which he replied by saying that it is very important to pick a couple of major areas within tech law and acquire a command over them, in addition to a well-rounded knowledge of constitutional as well as corporate law.
