The office of “Satya: Pro Bono law” was officially inaugurated this Saturday by Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal, Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao, Bharat Chugh and its founder Alina Arora (all of whom are members of its Board of Advisors) in the august presence of legal luminaries and academia. Satya opened its first office on the campus of National Law University, Delhi, with the enthusiastic support of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao, who hailed the initiative as particularly timely in light of NALSA’s recent legal awareness campaign, in which the Supreme Court called for increased law firm involvement.

Satya – Pro Bono Law’ is the culmination of its founder, Alina Arora’s vision to establish an institution of excellence in the practice of pro bono law. Whilst India is home to a thriving corporate legal sector and premier law schools, there is a dearth of high-quality professional legal services for the underprivileged sections of society. In this context, there is a possibility to leverage extant resources as well as skills such that the underprivileged have access to sincere and supportive legal aid.

Satya seeks to bridge the existing divide between justice and the marginalized groups of society by building a team of highly skilled pro bono lawyers who have solemnly resolved to secure justice and equality for all. Satya will strive to bring about a holistic change to the legal system through capacity building, awareness, and research; and above all, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to anyone by reason of economic or other disabilities. Satya’s team consists of lawyers and counsellors from premier law schools and universities who are all committed to the cause of social justice. Together, they aim to drive tangible progress in the ensuring access to justice to all sections of society.
