A team of lawyers, graduates, and students of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow who together have started an unprecedented feminist publication called Sun to Icarus. Sun to Icarus is a feminist zine inspired by Moxie on Netflix, the Riot Grrrl Movement, and our personal instances of sexism faced as women and lawyers, which has instilled in us an inexplicable rage to dismantle the patriarchy and break free of its chains. This publication, we believe is one of its kind initiatives when it comes to zine culture in educational institutions across the country.

The name Sun to Icarus is motivated by Icarus’ story in Greek mythology except we devised it to change the power dynamics. Icarus is a metaphor for patriarchy and we as the Sun aim to burn down its wax-wings, i.e. the man-made social constructs of misogyny and sexism. Our primary aim with this zine is to start the discussion beyond hushed tones and to amplify the voices that need to be heard in the field of gender parity. We aim to question the status quo existing in our law schools and the legal profession; gain perspective and power in our fight against patriarchy and create a safe space for survivors of sexual assault and harassment. We are confident that this will not only create ripples in our system but with time, also transform our campuses and institutions into progressive and more inclusive spaces for self-expression.

It is a monthly publication and the first issue was released on 1st June 2021. You can read it here. It comprises the following sections-

  • Editorial
  • Art in Resistance- features artwork and illustrations that are in line with the zine’s objectives by artists across the country.
  • Balance Ton Quoi – inspired by Balance ton Porcs, French equivalent of the MeToo movement. A platform for individuals to stand out bravely and call out incidents of harassment/sexism/assault on campus or in the legal fraternity.
  • Protests that Changed RML
  • Career Advice Woman to Woman
  • Financial Management
  • Guest Posts
  • Book Recommendations

We are happy to incorporate any contributions, suggestions, or feedback for the future editions where we hope to reach a larger audience, add to our arsenal against the patriarchy and together, bring a much-needed change. For any questions or clarification, please write to us at suntoicarus@gmail.com.
